Evaluate the statement “People with the best memory come from an oral culture.”[as opposed to video, audio, etc]

Question by garychan: Evaluate the statement “People with the best memory come from an oral culture.”[as opposed to video, audio, etc]
I read this online:
>>
>Sometimes you have to Sit Still & Concentrate | (Back to Top)

>The MTV generation expects constant stimulation.
>You were raised with constant video and audio
>You are used to frequent image changes.
>If TV wants you to forget what you saw in January so you can watch it again in July, does this influence how long you retain information?
>What does this do to your memory?
>People with the best memory come from an oral culture.

Back in the old days, people would sit together tell stories, talk etc. In comparison to the modern age where we are so consumed with technology, we have forgotten what’s it’s like to have a normal, face-to-face interaction.

I think the thing also is that today, we have all this techology to help us remember things, we have become so lazy to use our brains as a storage mechanism, as did many people did before the introduction of technology.

It’s true. Before the invention of written languages, people
would record their culture through word of mouth. There were
professional storytellers who would spend years hearing and telling their people’s histories and as a result their would
train their memories to be almost photographic. It’s a skill
that has been lost in most of the world.
These days, especially with the invention of television,
people use their minds and memories to a much lesser degree.
With video games in our lives the problem is becoming worse.
The long-term effects can only be foreseen as bad.

You can do simple research on this yourself…ask all of your friends with cell phones what your phone number is…I bet more than half don’t know it because they scroll to find your name and hit send. I am guilty of this as well, when I was a teenager (before cell phones) I knew ALL of my friends phone numbers but now we have external brains that do everything for us..so why do we need to remember …right?
